The Roman Empire Was Good For Everyone

Last night was house dinner with all the leftover Valpo dinner food, and that was pretty quality.  The more meals I can have where I don’t use my own food, the better.

At any rate, Early Church with the Valpo kids this morning was a grand affair.  Preceptor was talking about the Roman Empire and Graeco-Roman culture, and to illustrate all of their contributions to modern society, he passed out sheets of paper that had pieces of dialogue from Monty Python’s “Life of Brian.”  He assigned us all parts and we had to read it.  The best part must of been when Jenna read “we’re demanding a ten foot mahogany statue of the Emperor Julius Caesar with his cock hanging out,” which I laughed heartily at and immediately thought of friends such as Bethany and Josh and Ben and Nate and Karla.  Anyway, the Roman Empire gave us roads, common currency, a common language, the aqueduct, sanitation, medicine, education, and a bunch of other stuff.  I can dig it.

Later on I attended my first university lecture for my John Donne class.  It was crazy.  There were about one hundred kids in this mid-sized classroom and there weren’t enough chairs.  So I ended up sitting on the window sill with some other kids, and that was pretty uncomfortable.  I guess I’ll have to get there pretty early next time.  Anyway, take everything you know about the American education system and throw it out the window.  Or at least everything you know about Concordia.  The lady lecturing seemed pretty nice, but she just got up there and read straight from her notes.  Everyone else just sat and took notes.  She relayed some John Donne biographical information for awhile, then talked about how different critics perceived him based on the constructs he created for himself.  And then after 50 minutes it was done.  It’s basically a “no-pressure” situation, especially since I’m not actually enrolled in the class.  The prof won’t know anybody’s name the entire semester, she’ll just grade their papers when it’s all said and done with.

Afterwards Courtney and I walked a fair amount around Cambridge attempting to find a shop that sold yarn and needles.  We found that shop and I bought a skein of yarn and needles for 3.10.  Not bad, I suppose.  I’ll begin knitting soon, since I have so much time to kill.

Maybe London next weekend?

Since you’ll have so much time to kill, perhaps you should read “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” while listening to Chiodos.
